Special Projects
KUB regularly communicates with customers and the community about major utility projects through news releases, construction letters to residents, and signs in the construction area. When there is particular interest about a project in an area, we may also have public meetings.
This page offers additional information, such as fact sheets, news releases, or maps, for some long-term major projects that may be of interest to the community. If you have questions or would like to make comments on a project, you can e-mail mailto:comm@kub.orgor call 524-2911.
KUB Smart Grid Community Project
The KUB Smart Grid Community Project is funded by a grant from the Department of Energy as part of the federal government’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. It will include collaboration with the University of Tennessee on the installation of advanced metering infrastructure to 3,800 KUB customers in and around the University and the Fort Sanders area. This will provide these customers with near real-time information on their energy and water usage, enabling more efficient management of usage and costs.
Lower Third Creek Wastewater Storage Tank and Trunkline/Third Creek Greenway Detour
This project involves replacing 2,100 feet of wastewater trunkline along Third Creek. KUB will also construct a 6.5 million gallon wastewater storage tank at the west end of the Kuwahee Wastewater Treatment Plant on Neyland Drive and build a pump station near where Third Creek empties into the Tennessee River. The small parking lot in that area will be closed as part of the pump station project. The greenway detour will be in effect during the construction.
Projected construction: January 2010 to spring 2011.
Dale Avenue Substation
KUB will soon begin construction of a new electric substation at the corner of Dale Avenue and Seventeenth Street to support growth at UT and to provide increased reliability to UT, area hospitals, businesses and the Fort Sanders Community.
