Take Action at Work
- Make changes in your mission statement and company policy to include environmental impacts. Encourage employees to support the policy.
- Maintain your sewer lateral and cleanout to help keep rain, roots, etc., from causing backups in your business or overflows in our environment.
- Buy recycled products.
- Recycle to reduce waste.
- Install grease traps in all food service facilities.
- Use environmentally friendly cleaners; dispose of all chemical cleaners properly.
- Pave less, landscape more. Stormwater soaks into grass, but it runs off paved areas, carrying oil, dirt, and other pollutants to waterways.
- Direct rainwater from downspouts to landscaping.
- Consider gravel or other permeable surfaces to promote natural drainage. Permeable pavement, for example, allows water to soak through and decreases runoff.
- Control litter at your site by providing trash cans, covering dumpsters, etc. Water and wind carry trash to low points, like waterways.
- Sweep up litter and debris on paved areas (sidewalks, parking lots, parking garages, dumpster pads, etc.) instead of washing it into landscaping or the street where runoff may carry it to waterways.
- Wash vehicles only at commercial car washes, where water is properly collected, not in parking lots where soaps, etc., can runoff to contaminate waterways.
- Repair vehicles that are leaking fluids to prevent contaminating waterways.
- Cover vehicle-fueling stations and provide spill containment.
- Install and maintain oil/water separators.
- Divert stormwater away from exposed areas of construction sites.
- Seed and mulch bare areas as much as possible.
